President Donald Trump escaped unharmed Saturday night after a gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint outside the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton, triggering a chaotic evacuation that sent the president, First Lady Melania Trump, and senior Cabinet officials diving behind tables as panicked guests screamed and the smell of gunpowder filled the air.

The suspect — identified by multiple sources as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California — was taken into custody after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers. One Secret Service agent was struck by a round but was wearing a bulletproof vest and was taken to a hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect was also hospitalised for evaluation but was not struck by gunfire.

It was the third time in Trump's political career that an armed assailant has moved to target him — and the first time as a sitting president during a formal public event.

The Moment the Ballroom Erupted

The attack unfolded in an instant. Guests at the annual celebration of press freedom — one of Washington's most high-profile social events — were mid-dinner when the sharp crack of gunfire rang out from just beyond the ballroom doors.

"We heard what sounded like three to four successive shots. Originally it sounded like plates had fallen, loud noises. But I was there in Butler — that was gunfire and we knew it. We could also smell the gunpowder that was fired."

— CBS News White House Reporter Olivia Rinaldi, who attended the dinner

Al Jazeera producer Chris Sheridan, seated near the entrance, said he heard what he believed were five shots fired from just outside the ballroom. "We could smell the powder. We immediately dove to the ground. It was directly behind me," Sheridan said. Footage broadcast live on C-SPAN captured the moment guests across the ballroom leapt from their seats and took cover under tables as Secret Service agents — guns drawn — sprinted down the main aisle toward the exits.

Trump was rushed from the ballroom by his security detail within seconds. Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members including Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and White House Correspondents' Association president Weijia Jiang were all evacuated from the rear of the hotel. All were confirmed safe.

How the Attack Unfolded

  • Before the Dinner Cole Tomas Allen, believed to be a hotel guest at the Washington Hilton, is inside the property. DC Metro Police later confirm he had not been on any prior watchlist and was unknown to their department.
  • During the Dinner Allen charges the magnetometer security screening area near the entrance to the ballroom, carrying a shotgun in his hand. He is also armed with a handgun and multiple knives.
  • Shots Fired Between five and eight shots are exchanged. A Secret Service agent is struck in the chest but is saved by his bullet-resistant vest. Allen is taken to the ground by officers. He is not struck by gunfire but is injured in the confrontation.
  • Ballroom Evacuation Guests hear the shots and drop to the floor. Secret Service floods the ballroom. Trump, Melania, and Cabinet officials are rushed out. The dinner is cancelled.
  • Suspect in Custody DC Metro Police Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll confirms at a press conference that one suspect — a lone actor — is in custody. A room at the hotel is secured by police to determine its contents.
  • Trump Speaks from White House The president addresses the nation, calling Allen a "very sick person" and a "thug," confirming the Secret Service agent is "doing great," and pledging to reschedule the press dinner.

DC Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro confirmed the charges Allen will face at Monday's arraignment. FBI Director Kash Patel said investigators would be looking "thoroughly" into the suspect's background and motivation. DC Metro Police Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll stated that Allen appeared to be "a lone actor" and that Trump's security team had not been aware of any prior threats ahead of Saturday's dinner.

Trump: "This Is Not the First Time"

Speaking at a news conference at the White House shortly after the incident, a composed Trump addressed the nation directly, linking the attack to the broader pattern of political violence that has defined his public life.

"As you know, this is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin who sought to kill. In light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our differences peacefully."

— President Donald Trump, White House news conference, April 25, 2026

When asked by a reporter if he believed he was the personal target of the attack, Trump responded simply: "I guess." He praised his Secret Service detail effusively — "Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely" — and pledged that the White House Correspondents' Dinner would be rescheduled. He also released a photo on Truth Social of the suspect on the ground in custody, alongside security video showing Allen running past Secret Service officers.

Trump added a sobering observation about the nature of modern presidential security: "Today, we need levels of security that probably nobody has ever seen before."

The Third Attempt — A Pattern of Violence

Saturday's incident is the third time Trump has been the target of an assassination attempt. In July 2024, gunman Thomas Crooks opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing one bystander and grazing Trump's right ear before being shot dead by the Secret Service. A second attempt followed later in the 2024 campaign season. In all three cases, Trump has emerged physically unharmed.

Trump Assassination Attempts — Timeline

  • July 2024 — Butler, Pennsylvania: Thomas Crooks fires eight shots at Trump during a campaign rally. One bystander killed; Trump's right ear grazed. Crooks shot dead by Secret Service.
  • September 2024 — Second Attempt: A second armed individual is apprehended near a Trump golf course in Florida before being able to open fire. Trump unharmed.
  • April 25, 2026 — Washington Hilton: Cole Tomas Allen charges security at the White House Correspondents' Dinner armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives. One agent injured; Trump evacuated safely. Suspect in custody.

World Leaders Condemn the Attack

International condemnations arrived swiftly. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum all posted statements expressing relief that Trump was unharmed and denouncing the violence in strong terms.

"Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned."

— Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, posting on X, April 25, 2026

Security Questions and What Comes Next

Despite the swift response by the Secret Service, former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe raised pointed questions about how Allen was able to get as close as he did. "Despite the great result, they'd probably do well to ask themselves some questions about how they should think about this in the future," McCabe told CNN's Jim Sciutto. "He got pretty far beyond the perimeter established by security."

The fact that Allen was believed to be a hotel guest raises additional concerns — the Washington Hilton was not an open venue, and those inside had already undergone a level of background screening simply by virtue of their attendance. How Allen gained access, how he smuggled weapons into the building, and what his precise motive was remain the central questions of an FBI investigation that is now fully underway.

The White House Correspondents' Association, whose annual dinner has been a fixture of Washington life for over a century, confirmed the event was cancelled for the evening. Trump, who had been attending as a sitting president for the first time, had been scheduled to speak at the celebration of press freedom — a notable gesture from a president who has been a fierce and litigious critic of the media throughout his career.

Saturday night's attack will not end that tradition. But it has ensured that when the dinner is eventually rescheduled, it will take place under a security posture that, as the president himself observed, the city has probably never seen before.
